Mariner Macey Brown traps the ball against Washington Academy September 23. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The girls soccer team lost to Calais 9-1 on September 21. At home, we played a close game with them with only 10 players. In this game, we only had nine players, and then only eight in the first half after Kaylee Morey got kicked in the head on a diving save. She was out for the rest of the half, returning in the field in the second half. Katie Hutchinson played the rest of the game in goal. Despite the major handicap, we played hard all the game and our one goal was a nifty left-footed kick by Macey Brown.
On September 23, the girls played an inspired game, tying Washington Academy 2-2 in double overtime. We did have 12 players, but WA had almost another team on the bench. WA scored first, but Kaylee Morey drove home a hard shot to tie it up by the half on an assist from Jill McDonald. After WA scored in the second half, our pressure finally paid off with McDonald breaking loose and punching home a goal with around 5 minutes left in regulation.
We dominated the first overtime despite our being overworked with several hard shots that either just went wide or were saved by the WA goalie. Many good opportunities without a goal. Katie Hutchinson did a superb job in goal for us, stopping 12 of 14 shots, which allowed Kaylee Morey to be a force in the midfield. I was impressed with our passing throughout the game, keeping control and allowing us to put 20 shots on goal. We were aggressive around the goal mouth as well.
The girls are 1-4-1 and playing well together. With a couple more players, we could get some rest and keep our stamina up throughout the late part of the game. Everyone is contributing and it is really fun to watch this team play.
