Deer Isle—The boys baseball team is pretty much the opposite from the girls. This is a young team without many players who had significant playing time on last year’s senior-laden team. With only 12 players on the team and three who haven’t played organized ball, it will be a challenge for first-year coach Shel Pierce.
The seniors include Tobey Snow, who pitched and caught last year, and Michael Barter who hasn’t played organized ball.
The juniors include Tommy Hutchinson at outfield and Jacob Sadler who hasn’t played organized ball before.
The sophomores include Myles Brown at pitcher and shortstop, Coleman Brown at pitcher and third base, Nathan Thompson at catcher and second base, Dillan Steele at first base, Jacob Gell at second base, Trevor Bubar at outfield, and Tim Foster at utility.
The are no freshmen but Chris Shahan is an eighth grader.
First year coach Shel Pierce is well versed in baseball. He has played at several levels of baseball and coached in high school at Attleboro, Massachusetts. He will have his work cut out for him to bring the group up to speed quickly, as we are just getting outdoors and there was no chance for any scrimmages.
The bulk of the team are sophomores, and overall their experience was somewhat limited when they were freshmen last year. Coach Pierce is optimistic that we can build on the players who are up to varsity speed already. How fast the other players can catch up will determine how well we can do. We do have several good pitchers, so that will help. Expect this team to start slow but hopefully pick up speed as the season progresses.
