Deer Isle-Stonington’s Kaylee Morey goes up for a layup during the Mariners’ home game against Greenville on January 12. By Franklin Brown
Deer Isle—The girls basketball team easily beat Machias 81-40 on January 19. We jumped out to a 31-7 lead after the first quarter and Coach Randy Shepard played mostly all the bench after that. It is very beneficial for the bench players to get experience on the floor and best to keep the starters from getting away with bad habits. We did make 15 of 18 free throws. Brittany Gray led us with 15 points, Lily Gray had 14, Kaylee Morey had 13, Rylee Eaton had eight, and Makayla Lebel, Kaley Eaton, Katie Hutchinson, and Brienna Limeburner each with six.
The girls are still undefeated and now in second place due to strength of schedule. We have a week off and need to keep sharp, as we have our last five games after that. It will be important to focus on several of them, especially Searsport, whom we barely beat in their gym and are worth Heal Points. We need to make a statement in that game.
Because of my work trip to Belize, I will miss the cluster of games that end the season. It hurts me that I can’t see the teams finish out the season, but this is a commitment I made, and I will see both teams in the postseason.
