Sophomore Jill McDonald cuts in against Washington Academy October 12 in Deer Isle. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The girls soccer team won 4-3 over Washington Academy October 16, putting them in 12th place in the Heal Point Standings. If they hold onto that ranking, they are in the playoffs and will face the #10 team in the prelims Friday.
That victory followed two losses, to Bangor Christian and George Stevens. The girls soccer team lost to George Stevens 3-0 on October 9. We played the game a lot closer than the score, trailing 2-0 until a GSA player chipped a shot over the goalie with 30 seconds left in the game. Sailor Eaton took over the goalie position and did an excellent job. We moved the ball well and had a couple good opportunities at the offensive end. We did this with 3 starters hurt, so the other players had to step up.
The girls lost to Bangor Christian 5-0 on October 12. Once again we were short-handed and were on the defensive most of the game. We haven’t been able to build on the momentum that we started the season with. We are 1-10-2 and have fallen off the list for the playoffs. We have gotten banged up a bit and even though we still move the ball well, goals have been scarcer than hen’s teeth. We still haven’t been able to solve that puzzle.
The boys lost to George Stevens 9-0 on October 10. We had only 11 players for various reasons and Tobey Snow played well in goal but we were mostly in our end. We managed a few shots on the GSA goal, and trailed only 3-0 at the half, but ran out of gas in the second half.
On October 12, the boys lost to Bangor Christian 6-0. It was a similar game to the George Stevens game where we were out manned. The boys end their season without a win at 0-14. We are playing much better, but with many players not able to play, we are back to playing with only one or no substitutes. We played a tough schedule for the most part and that made it hard to develop our offense. The good news is that all the players but Tobey Snow are returning, so we will start off in much better shape. We do need to work on being aggressive around the goal to score more.
