Deer Isle-Stonington High School sophomore Jill McDonald looks to make a turn for a play at the goal during a home game against George Stevens Academy on October 9. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle— The girls soccer team lost to Sumner 7-2 on October 2. The good news is that we scored twice on unassisted goals by Rylee Eaton and Abby Stinson. The bad news is that after I bragged up our stingy defense, we gave up seven goals. Kaylee Morey was in goal for much of the game and Katie Hutchinson filled in for the rest of the game.
The girls lost a tough game to Calais 2-1 on October 8. The bad news is that goalie Kaylee Morey was knocked out making a save when she was kicked in the head. I can understand players going after the ball, but this shouldn’t be happening. The surprise was that no penalty was called. With concussion protocol, Kaylee will have to miss a couple games at least.
We scored first, with Addie McDonald scoring off a corner kick by Rylee Eaton. After Kaylee Morey was hurt, Abby Stinson filled in at goal and did an excellent job with no preparation. The action went back and forth, but after Calais scored their second goal, we weren’t able to capitalize on our opportunities.
The girls are now 1-8-2 and have just slipped out of the playoff picture. We have lost several close games but need to gain some momentum back. It hasn’t helped that we have had some injuries, but we need to build on the offense we have found and keep our defensive presence, which we will have to do without standout goalie Kaylee Morey.
