Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy golf team came in eighth place at the Maine state high school golf championship at Natanis Golf Course on October 6.

The team registered a total of 388 points, competitive considering the difference between eighth place and 4th was just 13 strokes.

Houlton, the Penobscot Valley Conference champion from a week before, took first place.

Senior Percy Zentz came in with a four-over-par 74 on the 18-hole course, which was the best score from any golfer on the day. Senior Jacob Russett finished the tournament with a score of 95 in his last round as an Eagle golfer. Junior Tony Politano came in with a 102, while Duncan Howell scored a 115.

Coach Dwayne Carter said that one of the things that contributed to the team’s top-10 finish was consistency from hole to hole, something they worked on in practice the week leading up to the tournament.

“We talked a lot about managing the course in practice all week and at times we did a really good job with it and at other times we did not during the round,” he said.

Overall, Carter said his team was satisfied not only with their golf game during the state championship, but also with their season.

“It was a very good experience for our team members, and I was pleased with how they stayed focused during the round. We had a great season and improved a lot from start to finish,” he said.

While the team’s season is over, Zentz will be back in competition this Saturday, October 13, at the Maine state individual championship. The tournament will be played at Natanis Golf Course.
