Deer Isle-Stonington freshman Leighia Gray leads the charge up the field for the Mariners during a game against GSA on September 24. By Anne Berleant
Deer Isle—The girls soccer team lost a close game to Washington Academy on September 26, with a score of 2-1. This was another well-played game that we just couldn’t get good shots to get in. We had several opportunities to get more goals but it wasn’t in the cards. Abby Stinson scored our only goal, unassisted on a breakaway. Kaylee Morey had 19 saves on 28 shots and WA saved 6 of our 9 shots.
The girls lost a close game to Schenck 1-0 on September 29. This was similar to the first game we played against them with Schenck dominating the shots on goal. We managed to score a goal in overtime to beat them before, but this time they scored the only goal in regulation. In the first half, Kaylee Morey was able to stop a penalty kick to keep it scoreless. Kaylee Morey was hurt in a collision in the beginning of the second half, so Katie Hutchinson took over at goalie and did not give up a goal. We saved 24 of 30 shots and Schenck saved 2 of our 4 shots.
The girls are 1-6-2 and still clinging to the last playoff spot. I feel we are getting to the place where we can start to put a few goals in the net and build on our record. We are so close but haven’t quite gotten there. With our stingy defense, it won’t take much to do that.
