Blue Hill—After starting the season off with a shut-out loss to Dexter on August 31, the George Stevens Academy soccer team has been making progress.

The Eagles scored two goals in regulation during their season home opener on September 4 against Bucksport, and even gained a second half one-goal lead against the Golden Bucks during the late minutes of the half. Bucksport found the back of the net to send the game into double overtime, which ended in a tie; however, George Stevens Academy dominated in terms of shots on goal and possession time during the majority of the two five-minute overtime periods.

The team took the momentum from that game and brought it on the road against Searsport two days later on September 6, where senior goalkeeper Bess MacArthur and a strong defensive stand combined to blank the Vikings. The offense found the back of the net three times to take a 3-0 win.

One of the early improvements head coach Steve Bemiss wanted to see after the team’s first game was to be able to score. The Eagles are moving in the right direction, having now scored five goals in two games while only allowing two goals for their opponents.

The team is now 1-1-1 going into their second home game of the season on Thursday, September 13, against Mount Desert Island. The girls will continue the home stand through Saturday’s contest against the Houlton Shiretowners before two games on the road next week at Orono and Houlton.
