Early signs of maturity promising for GSA golf team

Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy golf team may be younger this year than last, but with first-place team finishes in two of their last three matches, the golfers are hoping for another successful season.

Senior Percy Zentz has been “very strong” again this season, said coach Dwayne Carter, and has medaled in two of the last three matches. Zentz has been a powerhouse for the Eagles’ golf team since his freshman year, competing in three state singles championships.

Jacob Russet, the only other senior on the team, has been steady at the number two position, according to Carter, while returning players Duncan Howell, John Bakeman and Joey Mitchell, all juniors, as well as sophomore Tony Politano, have all contributed to the top four scores for the team.

The team has also added freshman Willi Austin, who is new to the sport but “improving every day.”

“Everyone on the team has improved from a year ago and will be working on becoming more consistent and doing a better job with course management,” said Carter.

That consistency comes with maturity in playing the sport, which Carter said is already starting to progress in his young squad.

“It is great to see them be able to recognize their weaknesses and be able to self analyze and make some changes on their own,” he said.

The Eagles beat out teams from Ellsworth and Old Town during a match at Ellsworth on August 24 and came in first place, and took a win over Narraguagus in a home match, played at Deer Isle Country Club, on August 27. Their only loss on the season, as of September 4, came in Hermon on August 30. The team came in second place in that contest.
