Castine—The 2018 Castine Classic Yacht Race sets sail at 12 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, on a 19.6-nautical mile course, ending in Camden.
The race kicks off three days of competitive sailing, culminating in the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta on August 4.
The Castine Harbor bell will sound to begin the sailing Thursday afternoon. The event is hosted by the Castine Yacht Club, and those who wish to watch the fleet take off can do so from the Castine Town Dock or at Fort Madison on Court Street. The race is open to all monohull Classic and Spirit of Tradition yachts at least 28’ length overall with a valid CRF rating certificate.
The second race of the weekend, the Camden Classic, sets sail Friday from North Haven, travels through Deer Island Thorofare off Stonington harbor, and ends at Naskeag Point in Brooklin. This race is hosted by the Camden Yacht Club.
The final day of sailing will feature the fleet sailing through Eggemoggin Reach, turning at Halibut Rocks and down Jericho Bay, finishing just off Naskeag Point. The fleet is expected to include five competitive 45’ NY-32s, designed by Sparkman and Stephens in 1936; five 40’ to 41’ Concordia yachts built in the 1950s; and a 129’ Fife schooner built in 1931, according to David Bicks, chairman of the celebration.
The 19th annual Castine Classic Yacht Celebration will honor Brooklin Boat Yard, Rockport Marine, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, French & Webb, Gannon and Benjamin and Artisan Boatworks on August 1 with an exhibition at the Castine Town Dock and a symposium at Maine Maritime Academy.
The celebration will feature the recently launched 65’ sloop Anna, designed by Stephens Waring Yacht Design and built by Lyman-Morse; the new 91’ sloop Sonny III, designed by Bruce Johnson and the Brooklin Boat Yard design office and built by Brooklin Boat Yard and Rockport Marine; and the Herreshoff 65’ NY 50 Marilee, built in 1926 and recently restored by French & Webb.
