Blue Hill—With six games left in the regular season, the George Stevens Academy baseball team is 7-3, good enough for a current third place seed in the Class C North standings.

The team has gone 2-1 in the last three games, recording two wins against Orono and a loss to Mattanawcook Academy, who the team beat earlier this season.

Head coach Dan Kane said the juniors and seniors on the team have stepped up their game to provide leadership through practice and games.

“The freshmen and sophomores have also been following the upperclassmen’s lead and are working on becoming more consistent offensively and defensively,” he added.

Stefan Simmons and Ben Cole have each recorded three wins from the mound, with help from relief pitching by Austin Snow, Ethan Vinall, Owen Vinall, Memphis Parker and Garrett Parker. The pitching staff has been assisted by “above average” defensive play behind the plate by catchers Marshall Lebel and Ben Parker, according to Kane.

The team has put up 17 runs in the last three games; however, Kane said that his team is still working through some things offensively.

“The team has been very opportunistic and is working on cutting down on the number of strikeouts per game and putting more pressure on the opponents,” he said.

Simmons, Caden Mattson and Ethan Vinall have proven to be tough at the top of the lineup and have provided the team with a spark with their bats.

The Eagles have tough games against Mount Desert Island, Bucksport, and Dexter down the stretch, and Kane said that each of the remaining six games will be tough.

“We will have to really be mentally and physically ready for each game,” he said.
