Senior Silas Bates waits for the tag out at a May 11 home game against Jonesport. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The boys baseball team did it again last week, losing a heartbreaker to Bangor Christian 5-4 on May 8. This was probably our best game this year, despite the loss. We led the whole game and Tobey Snow pitched a masterful game until he had to come out after 6 innings for pitch count. Myles Brown came in for the seventh and did a good job, but BC was able to push across the 2 runs they needed for the win.
It was tough to lose such a well-played game to a strong opponent. Nathan Winchester had 2 singles, Tobey Snow had a 2 RBI single. Mason Oliver had a double, and Robby Turner had a single.
The boys lost a sloppy game to Jonesport 9-2. We couldn’t figure out their left-handed pitcher and didn’t get hits with runners on base. We made too many errors and mental mistakes that gave Jonesport runs. Myles Brown had a 2 RBI double, Nathan Winchester had 2 singles, and Tyson Rice and Robby Turner each had a single.
The boys lost another heartbreaker on May 14 to Penobscot Valley 7-6. I’m beginning to think we are snake bit. Tobey Snow pitched 4 innings and Silas Bates finished up. We took the lead 6-2 after 4 innings, led by a 3-run home run by Tobey Snow. PVHS scored 3 runs in the fifth but got the win on a walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh.
We had good offense besides Tobey Snow’s home run with Myles Brown, Robby Turner and Silas Bates each with 2 hits and Mason Oliver and Nathan Winchester each with a hit. Our defense was decent with only 2 errors.
The boys are the best 0-8 team around. We have lost 3 games by 1 run and 2 more by a couple runs. If one or two of those games were wins, we would be in the middle of the playoff picture. Coach Scott Oliver mentioned that he needs to get the freshmen more pitching experience as we have a lot of games coming up with little time between them. If we can just hang on at the end of the games, we will be successful.
