Sophomore Brienna limeburner winds up her pitch against Bangor Christian on April 23. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The girls softball team lost to Penobscot Valley 18-0 on April 20. Talk about a tough challenge for the first game of the year. PVHS is the reigning Class D champion and has an elite pitcher (only a sophomore) who is fast and accurate. Our pitching is developing but not to the point of being battle tested yet, as this was our first real game situation. Though it seemed liked it was one sided, we did get our bats on the ball with Kaylee Morey and Brienna Limeburner each getting a clean hit.
Then, the girls lost to Bangor Christian 17-13 on April 23. We were ahead 11-5 when we fell apart, mostly with walks, and Bangor Christian surged ahead. The game was called after 6 ½ innings because of darkness. BC had scored 6 runs in the top of the sixth, but they didn’t count in the final score. Coach Darian Gove noted we collectively gave up 27 walks and 3 hit batters. Only one of the BC runs was earned.
We ran the bases well with 30 stolen bases, led by Amy Friedell, Kaylee Morey, and Abby Stinson. We played well in the field overall, with Abby Stinson making many good stops at second; Kaylee Morey was solid behind the plate, catching runners stealing second, and Makayla Lebel throwing a runner out from left field.
Kaylee Morey led us at the plate with a triple, double, and 2 singles, Taylor Hardy and Amy Friedell each with 3 singles, Kaley Eaton a single and a double, and Brienna Limeburner and Abby Stinson each with 2 singles.
The girls are playing well and mostly need to find some pitching consistency. We need to make the opponents earn the base and trust our defense to make the outs. We also will welcome the big bat of Katie Hutchinson who had been away for these two games. We may be a little slow getting out of the gate, but I feel we will start to find success as we get going now.
