Blue Hill—After a stunning 3-2 loss to Fort Kent in last year’s Class C quarterfinals, the George Stevens Academy baseball team is looking for the same spark that got them to the 2016 Class C state championship game.

Returning just six players from last year’s team, which finished in first place with a 13-3 record, the Eagles will rely on their younger players, many of whom are playing varsity for the first time, to find success on the diamond.

“I expect the team to be very competitive and hopefully we will all come together to make a run at the postseason,” said head coach Dan Kane.

Senior Stefan Simmons will return as the ace on the mound, having pitched in several successful outings during the 2017 season. Simmons’ bat was also a contributing factor in the offense for GSA during last season.

Marshall Lebel, Tyler McKenney, Ethan Vinall, Ben Parker and Ben Cole are also returning from last year’s team and “will all play significant roles this spring,” according to Kane.

Kane’s squad will look to newcomers Caden Mattson, Austin Snow, Owen Vinall, Tanner Ashley, Elias Reyes, Memphis Parker, Ethan Snow and Garret Parker to round out the team.

The Eagles have only been practicing for a couple of weeks, but Kane said that he is already seeing some positive things of his team.

“The team has already looked talented on the diamond,” he said.

George Stevens Academy has a jam-packed home schedule to start the season off, with games scheduled against Mattanawcook Academy, Orono, Central and Dexter, on April 23, April 25, April 27 and April 30, respectively. All games have a start time of 4:30 p.m.
