Blue Hill—The Eagle varsity softball team faces Mattanawcook in its season opener on Monday, April 23, but has been on the field, and in the gym, for practices and a recent scrimmage against Searsport.
“We were right up to speed with Searsport but then the cold and inexperience killed us,” Coach Stormi Wentworth said of the practice game April 11.
With only two hours of outside field practice before the game, Wentworth said her team held strong to the fifth inning with junior catcher Heather Munroe hitting three for three.
“She’s really strong,” Wentworth said.
Returning as coach after a one-year hiatus from back surgery, Wentworth said, “I’m just really excited, and I’m really excited about the team.”
The 12-player team combines experienced and new players, including freshman Sophie Peasley on the pitcher’s mound and Morgan Welts.
“It’s a lot of work. Skills and drills, that’s all we basically work on,” Wentworth said. “They need a lot of repetition but they’re a really good group of girls. A nice attitude, positive, and willing to do everything and anything I ask.”
