Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy girls varsity basketball team is on roll, crushing Lee Academy 66-24 on January 29 and Penquis 61-27 on February 1, for a 13-4 record. (The team faced Searsport on February 3, but the score was not available by press time.)
Of their four losses, two came from Class B Ellsworth, while early season defeats against Piscataquis and Calais turned to wins the second time around.
The team is ranked eighth in the Heal Point Standings, and if they can hold on to that spot they will play their preliminary playoff game on home court on February 9.
But that’s next week. At their game against Penquis, the focus was on the team’s seven seniors: Margaret Brooks, Alyssa Chesney, Megan Gale, Cora Gray, Hanna Gutow, Allyson Snow and Maeghan Tobey, who received flowers and climbed in the stands to share hugs with their parents.
Senior starters Hanna Gutow and Margaret Brooks stepped back to allow the remaining seniors to start the game, as the team began a cruise to victory.
“It’s a terrific group of seniors,” Coach Bill Case said. “I don’t want the season to end.”
