Blue Hill—With the score tied 1-1 and two outs, GSA’s Taylor Schildroth turned a base hit into the winning run. It was the bottom of the 11th, and relief pitcher Garrison Looke had been throwing strike-outs and shutting down steals after #3 Mattanawcook Academy tied the game at the top of the sixth.
Schildroth stole second base and was poised at third over the next two batter-ups when a tip off Nick Bianco’s bat bounced off the catcher’s mitt, opening a window for Schildroth to cross home plate for a 2-1 win and a chance to play for the Class C Eastern Maine title.
Solid pitching from Kelsey Allen for the first six innings and a few timely fumbles in the field by Mattanawcook helped the #2 Eagles cement the win before a home crowd.
The Eagles last brought home the Eastern Maine Class C title in 2009. They won the state championship in 1997, 2003 and 2004. They faced #1 Bucksport on June 17 at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor where they lost to the Bucksport Golden Eagles 5 to 3.
