Hampden—For the third time in the last four years, the George Stevens Academy boys soccer team has come up one game short of the state championship after losing 3-1 against Class C North newcomer Mount View on November 5.

The Eagles took on the Mustangs in sopping conditions on the turf field at Hampden Academy in the Class C North regional finals, after taking out Sumner 7-0 in the semifinals.

The Mustangs, who played a predominately Class B schedule during the regular season, got on the board first with a goal coming eight minutes into the game. George Stevens tied it up just over 10 minutes later, with a rocket of a shot from sophomore David Gadsby beyond the 18-yard box that hit the back of the net. That goal was the first regional final goal the Eagles scored since 2016’s loss to Washington Academy. The team was blanked in Fort Kent in 2017.

George Stevens Academy allowed another Mustang goal with less than 15 minutes to go in the half, and went into halftime trailing 2-1.

The Eagles came out firing in the second half, but despite well placed balls deep in Mount View territory and several scoring opportunities, the team was unable to put the ball in the net. The Mustangs scored one more goal with 29 minutes to go in the game, securing the win. The Eagles finish the season 11-2-3.
