Deer Isle—The boys soccer team had the only game this week and lost to Bangor Christian 9-0 on Thursday, September 5. I only saw the second half, and we played much better in that half than the score would indicate. The action was not as lopsided as you would imagine by the score. Both Dylan Thompson and Elijah Stinson nailed strong kicks off the crossbar that easily could have been goals. Near the end, Elijah Stinson got the ball past the goalie, only to have the BC defense kick it away before we could get to the ball.
I felt that this was like a preseason game for us, working on passing and communications between the lines. We played hard right to the end, with a good attitude despite the score. It was certainly a tough test for freshman goalie Joe Snow, and he will learn from it. BC forwards got too many one-on-one shots with him.
I’ve said it before, and so I’ll say it again: sometimes failure is the best recipe for success. It can be a great motivator. I saw a lot of positives in our play in the second half. We passed well and had some good offense, despite not getting a goal. This is a motivated team and I expect them to do much better as they settle into the season.
