Mariners still looking for groove on the diamond

Deer Isle—The boys baseball team lost to Schenck 13-2 on May 1. We played three strong innings, trailing only 1-0, when everything fell apart, walks, fielding errors, mental errors just compounded into a disaster inning. We only managed one hit by Myles Brown. Coleman Brown pitched a good game up to that inning and we just gave up too many chances.

The boys lost a close game to Machias 1-0 on May 3. Because we had a double header in the afternoon on Friday, each game was only five innings. Tobey Snow pitched a great game with five strikeouts, giving up four hits and only three walks. Myles Brown had two hits and what hurt us was not being able to get the timely hits we needed with runners in scoring position in the last two innings.

The boys lost the second game to Machias 9-0. Myles Brown pitched a decent game, but we made errors and mental miscues with men on base which cost us runs. We also did not get a hit, so we didn’t have base runners. It also was a cold wet afternoon with light rain which made it hard to play.

The boys lost a forgettable game to George Stevens. We barely had nine players and many of them had to play out of position. Nothing went right, and it was a rough game for our young team. To quote coach Shel Pierce “that’s all I am going to say about it.”

The boys are winless and struggling to put together consistent play. One of our glaring shortcomings is our lack of offense. This is a rebuilding year and we are bound to have bad innings in the field at times. We are working hard and need to keep going at it to find success.
