Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy girls soccer team took a much needed 3-0 win over Deer Isle-Stonington High School on October 9, improving their record to 5-5-2 entering the final games of the regular season.
The team had not registered a goal since a 4-0 home win against Searsport on September 26, instead falling short to Ellsworth, 2-0, on October 3 and tying Mount Desert Island, 0-0, on October 4.
The Eagles are currently in eighth place in the Class C North standings, good for a spot in the playoffs. The team takes on Orono on October 11, a team right above them in seventh place. Orono took a marginal 2-1 win over George Stevens Academy during the first matchup of the season between the two teams, but that was a month ago. Coach Steve Bemiss’s team has come up with three wins since that game and held Mount Desert Island to a tie under the lights last week.
The final matchup of the regular season, scheduled for October 13, is against second place Houlton, which has only lost one game all season. George Stevens Academy was blanked during the first contest between the two teams, as the Eagles fell 3-0 in Houlton.
A win against either team could allow for a late shake up in the standings and give George Stevens Academy a chance to finish the regular season a couple spots higher. The top six teams receive a bye into the quarterfinals, while seven through 10 play a preliminary match. If the Eagles can hold onto their eighth-place spot, or finish higher, they will be guaranteed at least one home game during the post season.
The October 11 game is scheduled for 4 p.m., while the October 13 game is slated for 1 p.m. Both games will be played at home in Blue Hill.
