Mariner soccer team winless as season end draws near Scotts Sports Spot

Winning the ball

Deer Isle-Stonington sophomore Coleman Brown gets up in the air to win the ball during a home game against Jonesport-Beals on October 6. By Jack Scott

Deer Isle—The boys soccer team lost to Sumner 11-1 on October 3. Sumner is one of the top teams in Class C and we are not at that level yet. Our lone goal was put in by Dakota Emrick assisted by Dru Hancock. The fact that we did mount some offense against Sumner shows that we are making progress, even against the top teams.

The boys lost to Jonesport 8-0 on October 6. I was hoping that we would have a chance to surprise Jonesport, but it was Jonesport who out hustled us. They have a bigger and more experienced squad. Their defense would boot the ball down the field and the forwards would go after the ball, usually winning it. They were able to pass and get many hard, open shots on goal. Tobey Snow was in goal from most of the game, but Elijah Stinson played there in the second half. We did push the ball into the Jonesport end many times but weren’t able to get good clean shots.

The boys are 0-12 and have had a long climb on the learning curve. If you watched us play through the season, you can see the improvement in the way we passed and moved the ball. Because of our overall tough schedule, the scores didn’t necessarily reflect that progress. Overall as a team, we needed to play with more energy, especially since we had more of a bench this year as the season progressed. Sometimes when we got down by two or three goals, we lost our fire and that is the one thing we should never lose.
