Deer Isle-Stonington sophomore Jacob Gell keeps his eye on the ball while defending against a Bucksport player during a home game on September 27. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The boys soccer team lost to George Stevens 9-0 on September 25. As in some of the earlier games, we were outmatched and were on the defense for most of the games. Unfortunately, these are not the games we need when we are trying to put the pieces all together in our rebuild.
The boys lost to Bucksport 5-1 on September 27. We are playing better on the offensive side and were moving the ball into the Bucksport end more frequently. Our lone goal was on a perfectly-placed direct kick by Myles Brown. With Tobey Snow taking over the goalie job, we have a solid front line that is evolving in the offensive end. Again, Jacob, “the Stopper” Gell was effective in diverting the Bucksport forwards as they slashed towards the goal.
The boys lost to Schenck 5-0 on September 29. We kept Schenck off the board until halfway through the first half. Coach Joe Stinson commented that the referees were calling the game closely, so there wasn’t some of the shoving and roughness that we have seen in other games.
Coach Stinson stated that Sam Knowlton has been playing with a lot of hustle all over the field and also noted the high energy from Jacob Gell, Myles Brown, and Mason Plummer, along with the emergence of Coleman Brown as an effective player. I hate to mention individuals because most everyone plays hard, but these players have been standing out. Also, we have the addition of Dru Hancock, who was displaced by the volcanic eruptions in Hawaii and is here for a while.
The boys are still winless at 0-10 but are improving as a team and have benefitted from having a bench to rely on for resting. With 3 of our last 4 games against very strong teams, we realistically don’t have hopes of the playoffs. This Saturday, we are in hopes of knocking off Jonesport after taking a beating from them in Jonesport. It’s at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 6 so come on out and cheer them on.
