Blue Hill—Coming off a win over Calais on September 21, the George Stevens Academy golf team now sets its sights on success at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships on September 27 at Jato Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.

Coach Dwayne Carter said his team worked on strategy and on course management during practices earlier this week, breaking down the Jato course hole-by-hole. The team traveled to Lincoln last Saturday to play the course, in tough weather conditions that could mirror the conditions of the course during the championship match.

Seniors Percy Zentz and Jacob Russett are on course to qualify for the Individual State Championship if they perform well on Thursday, said Carter, and they, along with the rest of the team, were working on finding ways to shave points off their scores during practices leading up to the PVCs.

“Our goal is to be one of the top teams and qualify for the State Championships,” he said.

This week the team also went to the driving range to work on specific clubs and shots and practiced at the Island Country Club in Deer Isle to play the course’s longer holes and faster greens. Wednesday they had a light practice in Blue Hill before strategizing for Thursday’s championship.

“Hopefully with this preparation we will achieve the result we have been working for,” said Carter.
