Deer Isle-Stonington High School sophomore Emma Plummer runs in stride with a Bangor Christian opponant to gain possession of the ball during a home game on September 19. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle— The girls soccer team lost a close game to Bangor Christian 3-0 on September 19. It was a 1-0 game until late in the second half when Bangor Christian got a couple goals to give them insurance for the victory. Bangor Christian controlled the ball more than we did, but we are getting more aggressive to the ball, which is good to see.
The girls lost to Searsport 4-0 on September 21. Searsport scored very early in the first half and then with 2 minutes left in the half. At some point, Kaylee Morey injured her hand and Katie Hutchinson took over as goalie. The downside of being fearless in goal is that you can get banged up. We made many runs at the Searsport goal, but we couldn’t get off hard shots on goal.
The girls lost to George Stevens 11-0 on September 24. Yes, I also thought this was a typo when I first saw it. It turns out that both Kaylee Morey and Katie Hutchinson were hurt and couldn’t play in goal, so Coach Jamie Sullivan had Emma Plummer take over. She hasn’t practiced in goal since junior high. After we got down 4-0, Coach Sullivan played everyone who has seen limited time to go and have fun. This was reflected in the final score, which was an aberration to our normal level of play.
The girls are 1-4-2 and though we are still in the playoff picture, we need to find our offense. We are more aggressive and are passing well, getting down to the goal, but we are not getting enough quality shots on goal to produce goals. I wish I could say whether it is spacing or having enough players there to punch in a shot, but this is our Achilles heel. If we can solve that, we will get wins because we are doing so well everywhere else on the field.
