Deer Isle—The girls soccer team lost to Searsport 3-1 on September 4. Searsport scored 2 goals in the first half, including one from a penalty kick. Lily Gray scored unassisted in the second half. Kaylee Morey played in goal the first half and Katie Hutchinson was there in the second half. We made 20 saves on Searsport’s shots and they made 15 on ours, so the game was not so one-sided.

The girls stunned Schenck 1-0 on Saturday, September 8, in the second overtime for their first win. Schenck dominated us throughout the game, with Kaylee Morey making 25 saves on 42 shots and Schenck making 2 saves on 4 shots. We were on the defensive all game with Kaylee Morey putting on a goalie clinic. The Schenck fans were amazed as their shots were stopped, a couple times by the crossbar (a goalie’s best friend), time and time again.

So, a minute into the second overtime, Abby Stinson, aka the “Schenck slayer,” stole the ball, drove through the defense and drilled the ball past the goalie. We went ballistic in joy and Schenck just looked totally shocked. It just goes to show that by fighting hard to the end and never giving up, anything can happen.

The girls are off to a good start at 1-1-1 and are in 11th place, though Heal Points don’t mean much until the end of the month when all the games equal out. We still need to work on finishing our offensive thrusts, but with our defense doing well, we can use our momentum from Schenck to get more wins.
