Mariner girls soccer team features experience Scott's Sports Spot

Deer Isle—The girls have big numbers with a good experience this year and are poised to atone for the winless season last year. We did manage 5 ties, but we struggled to put the ball in the net. Though this will be a challenge this year as well, we will start off the season with much more experience and should have much better results.

The seniors include two of the captains, Kristin Thompson and Lily Gray, as well as Abby Stinson, Kaley Eaton, Gabby Gray, Haley Hardy, and Addie McDonald. These players will all be in the forward/mid field positions except for Haley Hardy who will play defense.

The juniors include Katie Hutchinson, midfield and in goal; Myra Hobbs, forward; Deja Benner, defense; Sailor Eaton, defense; and Ella Marshall, defense.

The sophomores include the third captain, Kaylee Morey, in goal; Jill McDonald, forward; Rylee Eaton, midfield; Peyton Rice, defense; and Emma Plummer, midfield.

The freshmen include Maggie Bubar at mid field and Leighia Gray at defense.

I always want to explain that the positions are fluid as the season progresses and second year coach Jamie Sullivan thinks there may be a few more players that come aboard as school starts. Over the years, this is a luxury to have as many players as we have this year.

We are also fortunate to have scheduled a scrimmage game with Narraguagus. It helps us get a look at where we are and working together. We played to a tie (of course) 1-1. Jill McDonald scored our goal assisted by Rylee Eaton.

Once again, our main challenge as a team will be to get the ball into the net. We played with good ball control last year and that should continue into this year. With our size and experience, we have the energy and motivation to be a contender this year. Come out and support these girls. They will not disappoint you.

The girls also went to Calais and ended up with a 1-1 tie (of course) on September 1 through two overtimes. Calais scored first and then Jill McDonald scored for us unassisted. Calais did have more shots than we did but Kaylee Morey was up to the task in goal and made 16 saves.
