Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy and Deer Isle-Stonington High School tennis teams closed out their seasons against each other on Wednesday, May 23, with the Eagles coming out with the 5-0 win in both contests.

The matches got under way on time despite lingering rain clouds and puddled courts. The girls took to the courts at the Blue Hill Country Club, while the boys played at the high school courts.

In girl’s action, GSA’s Courtney Bianco picked up a 8-4 win over Marissa Judkins. Bianco was able to hold off a late rally in the match by Judkins to record the win.

The doubles matches kicked off competition, as the teams of Lily Gray and Addie McDonald and Gaby Gray and Rylee Eaton both dropped their matches 2-8.

On the boy’s side, the doubles teams came closest to recording a win for the Mariners, with Ian Cust and Ennis Marshall losing 4-8 to Bowen Sul and Liam Webb. Doubles teammates Mason Plummer and Oskar Mattes dropped their match to Oscar Son and Joey Mitchell, also 4-8.

In singles, GSA’s Kent Fang beat out Devon Emerick 8-2, while Lars Hooper won his match over Ben Penfold 8-2. Quinn Stabler made it a clean sweep for the Eagles with an 8-5 win over Dakota Emerick.

The Deer Isle-Stonington boys team opened their postseason run with a 3-2 preliminary win over Calais, while the girls lost a tight 2-3 contest to end their season early. The Mariner boys played their Class D quarterfinal match in Orono on May 30.

For George Stevens Academy, both teams will be in action at home on May 31, with the boys playing Schenck and the girls matching up against Houlton.

George Stevens Academy girls coach Tim Farrar said during the May 23 matches that he “feels good” about his team’s chances going into the postseason. Mark Ensworth, the boys coach for GSA, noted that his team has been steadily improving throughout the season and that they could surprise some teams down the stretch.
