Deer Isle—The girls softball team lost to Sumner 9-4 on April 30. Once again, we were hurt by too many batters getting a free pass to first base, 20 in all. We made some great plays in the field, with Kristin Thompson catching a runner going home in a run-down with Kaylee Morey. Brienna Limeburner snared a line drive and doubled a runner off the base.
We scored 2 runs in the first, but Sumner scored all their runs in the next 3 innings to put us behind 9-2. Each team ended up with 5 hits and 2 errors. Abby Stinson had 2 singles with 2 RBIs, Brienna Limeburner 2 singles, Kristin Thompson a single, Haley Hardy a sacrifice bunt, and Kaylee Morey an RBI.
The girls are 0-3 and are looking to limit walks. If we can do that, our defense is strong enough to keep us in games. We are aggressive in the bases and the offense is good enough to turn things around and build some confidence.
The boys baseball team also lost to Sumner 5-2 the same day. It was a close game until Sumner broke loose with 3 runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Mason Oliver pitched the first five innings and Silas Bates finished the sixth. Overall, we played well defensively, with the only exception in the fifth inning where a couple of errors combined with some Sumner hits cost us 3 runs.
Sumner had scored a run in the third inning and we came right back with 2 runs in the fourth. The offense struggled a bit though we had 5 hits, but all were singles. Tobey Snow had 2 singles, Tyson Rice, Mason Oliver, and Stephen Cochrane (bunt) each had a single.
The boys are 0-3 but have played some close games. We are making a good effort and should be rewarded with a win soon.
