Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy baseball team picked up its second win of the season with a 12-1 victory over Mattanawcook Academy at home on April 23.

Senior pitcher Stefan Simmons threw three quick strikeouts in the first inning to blank the top of the Mattanawcook lineup before the offense took over the bottom of the inning, driving in four runs to put the Eagles on the board early.

Simmons recorded 11 strikeouts and only one earned run in his six innings on the mound to lead a tough defensive outing for the Eagles.

The offense was backed by a balanced hitting effort, led by Caden Mattson’s two singles and one run batted in. Tanner Ashley hit one single and one double for two RBIs, and Ethan Vinall drove in three runs off a single. Owen Vinall had two singles and two RBIs on the game.

“We got balanced offense throughout the lineup and took advantage of a few crucial Mattanawcook errors,” said coach Dan Kane.

Softball team struggles in first outing

The George Stevens Academy softball team also played host to Mattanawcook Academy on April 23 to open the season. The team struggled to get runners across the plate as the team was held scoreless in a 0-43 loss.

Freshman pitcher Sophie Peasley was in the circle to start the game for the Eagles, who gave up 14 runs in the first two innings of play.

Despite the loss, head coach Stormi Wentworth remains optimistic.

“It was our first outing, we’re going to get better,” she said.
