Blue Hill—The frigid temperatures and dreary weather has not stopped this year’s sailing team from George Stevens Academy. The team, after spending just one day practicing out on the water, traveled to Marblehead, Mass., to compete in the Maine Invitational on April 7.
Of the six races Eagle sailors competed in, George Stevens Academy was only able to log one win on the day. Despite the struggles, new head coach Andy Stephenson said he was happy with the way his team performed.
“I was very proud of our kids, both on and off the water,” said Stephenson.

Stephenson added that the “blustery weather,” compounded by the limited practice, was not enough to keep the sailors from giving all of their effort in each race.
“I was concerned that the athletes would be intimidated by the conditions,” he said. “Nothing could be further from the truth. They handled the conditions like the experienced sailors I now see them to be.”
Returning from last year’s team are Katie Forest, Joe Chiampa, Oceana Ragot and Silas Murnik. The newcomers are a mixed bag of experience, as Sylvia Burns, Finn Russet, Ryan Mitchell, Hope Bowden, Susanna Jakub and Tom Mount-Miller all have different skill sets.
The team is also missing three sailors from last year’s team—Hattie Slayton, Marie-Louise Boulet and Tess Williamson—who are all studying abroad.
“We miss them, but are delighted to have a group of committed, positive athletes to shape this year’s team,” said Stephenson.
The team will host the Downeast Regatta on May 12 and 13 in Castine.
