BLUE HILL—The George Stevens Academy volleyball team posted a commanding 3-0 win over the Sumner Tigers at home in the team’s last match of the season Monday, October 17.
After taking a 5-2 lead to open the first set, George Stevens kept that three-point lead in the middle of the set, causing Sumner to call a time out. Sumner cut the lead to two at 24-22, but George Stevens managed the set point for the 25-22 set win to go up 1-0 on the match.
Sumner battled back in the second set, taking an early 5-4 lead. Four lead changes and one tie later, George Stevens was able to edge out the Tigers for another 25-22 set win and a 2-0 lead going into the third set.
It was all George Stevens in the third set, as the team took an early 4-2 lead before stretching that lead to 12-6. The team eventually went on to take the match in straight sets, winning the third and final set by a score of 25-18.
Melanie Hipsky went 9-11 in serving, recording three aces and two digs. Yvonne Rogers had a successful serving night as well, going 15-16 with seven aces to go along with three kills at the net. Emma Weed went 13-14 on her serves with three aces, while Marena Keonka was a perfect 10-10 on her serves with three aces.
The match was the second win for the Eagles volleyball team this season. Their first win came in the form of a five-set 3-2 match against Jonesport-Beals midway through the season. The team finished the season 2-12 in its first season as a varsity sport contender.
