Bangor—Pom poms, big smiles and school spirit ruled the Cross Center in Bangor at the regional cheerleading competition on January 23.
Ten Class D squads from across the state put their best feet forward in the form of jumps, splits, chants and stunts, bidding for a spot in the state championships on February 6.
A fifth-place finish secured a spot for the Mariners cheerleading squad at the state championships.
“We can only go up from here,” Coach Kim Yurchick said, after the results were announced at the Cross Center in Bangor.
The Mariners’ strongest scores came from their jumps, netting 15.5 points out of a possible 25. The squad’s total score was 45.7 out of 100 points, with the first place Central Aroostook team awarded 67.4.
The six top-scoring teams out of 10 Class D schools entered in the competition qualified for the state competition.
Yurchick plans to work on “a few” new stunts for the state championships at the Cross Center.
“We have two weeks,” she said after the competition.
