The Deer Isle Stonington Mariners and George Steven Academy Eagles opened the 2015-16 season with a double face-off: the Lady Eagles hosted the Mariners for a win on Friday, while the GSA boys rolled over the Mariners boys in Deer Isle on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles came out strong, jumping to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter and never looking back. The 55-15 final score saw Morgan Dauk with 22 points and 19 rebounds, Mazie Smallidge with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Hanna Gutow with five assists in the first half.
With a 49-9 score to open up the fourth quarter, the Mariners matched GSA six for six, after GSA Coach Bill Case sent in his bench to finish the game.
MarinerAshley Haskell scored 5 points, while Ally Eaton led the Mariners in pints and fight. She finished with 8 points.
The Mariner varsity boys team fell 82-49 to the Eagles at Deer Isle, with GSA widening the scoring gap from a 16-6 first quarter lead to 64-24 to open the fourth. Eagle Taylor Schildroth led the Eagles with 17 points, while Khalede Clark chipped in 13. Mariner Elliot Nevells scored 9 to lead the Mariners.
With the re-divisioning of the basketball classes, the Mariners, a Class D team, will face more higher class teams, like the Class C Eagles, than in previous seasons.
The Mariner girls face Class C Searsport today, in an away game,December 7, and host Class C Sumner on Thursday, December 10. Tip-off is 6 p.m. The boys host Searsport boys tomorrow , December 8, at 6:30.
The Eagles boys host Piscataquis tomorrow, December 8, 7 p.m., while the girls are away this week, at Piscataquis today and Calais on Thursday.
