Blue Hill—Just three games away from a potential appearance in the postseason, the George Stevens Academy girls basketball team is looking to roll off some late-season momentum.

After three straight losses, the Eagles have gone 3-1 in its last four games, with the only loss coming to Deer Isle-Stonington High School on January 25 at home. The team lost the game by nine, 33-42, but the home team was either tied or ahead by a slim margin for much of the first three quarters of the game. The Mariners pulled away for the victory led by a strong defensive effort to close out the game, but the Eagles kept pace with the 15-1 Class D second seed.

Taking a bump

The Eagles were led by sophomores Luna Perry-St.Peter and Sophia Biggie-Jennings, who each put up 11 points on the game. Sophomore Evelyn Dagan contributed six points.

Before that game, the Eagles won three straight games, against Mattanawcook Academy (51-31) and two against Sumner (62-46 and 50-45).

George Stevens Academy currently holds the 14th spot in Class C, right on the cusp of playoff contention. With a 6-9 record, the Eagles are hoping to pick up regular season sweeps against Lee Academy and Mattanawcook Academy, two teams they have beaten already this season. The Eagles will be on the road against the Pandas of Lee Academy on Friday, January 31, before returning home against Mattanawcook on February fifth for the last game of the season. Tipoff for both are scheduled for 7 p.m.

The last time the Eagles made it to the postseason was 2017, when the team, led by 1,000 point scorer Morgan Dauk, made it to the Class C North regional final at the Cross Insurance Center as the number two team. The Eagles lost that game in a heart-breaker against fifth place Dexter, 32-35. The team will look to channel some of that energy, and keep the momentum going, as they begin to prepare for life after the regular season.
