Orono—With just two more meets before the Small Schools Championship on February 8, runners on the George Stevens Academy boys and girls indoor track team took to the Fieldhouse on the University of Maine in Orono campus for a meet on January 18. The girls team took fourth place out of five teams with 33 points, while the boys came in fifth of five teams by just three points, scoring 36 while Central High School scored 39 for fourth place.
Ellis Murnik took a first-place victory in the 55-meter dash with a time of 8.52, which highlighted the individual finishes for the girls team. After finishing first in the preliminary race, Grace Broughton took second in the 55-meter hurdle finals, with a time of 9.79, just sixth-tenths of a second behind the top finisher. Broughton also took third in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:40, while team member Josie Czuj finished fifth with a time of 2:41. Murnik also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 32.16.
The relay team of Broughton, Czuj, Murnik and Alexa Kennedy finished in second place in the 4×200 meter relay, the only relay event the girls team competed in on the day.
For the boys, Ian Renwick highlighted the individual competition for the Eagles, with a first place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, and a second place finish in the 200-meter dash. Andrew Hipsky and Trevor Cochrane came in third and fourth, respectively, in the 800-meter run, while Hipsky also took third in the 55-meter hurdles.
The team is scheduled to compete twice more on the Fieldhouse track to close out the regular season. The Small Schools Championship is also planned to take place at that location, which has hosted teams from around the area weekly since the start of the season.
