Deer Isle—The girls basketball team beat Jonesport 57-39 on December 18. We held a comfortable lead throughout, and everyone got to play. We had balanced scoring with Rylee Eaton 15 points, Kaylee Morey and Macey Brown each with 12, and Peyton Rice and Brienna Limeburner each with eight.

The girls beat Bucksport 62-40 on December 23, leading by double digits throughout the game. Everyone played and we had balanced scoring again with Rylee Eaton at 20 points, Kaylee Morey 15, Macey Brown with six, and five players with four each.

The girls went to the Cross Center and lost a close game with Greenville 39-35 on December 28. We did not shoot well and, again, Greenville put a player to shadow Rylee Eaton all over the court. The score was tied at the half and we managed a four-point lead after three quarters. Our offense sputtered after that.

Greenville came back to lead 33-30 with three minutes left. They pulled the ball out and we had to foul. We had many chances but couldn’t get the shots to fall and Greenville made a few foul shots. It was 38-32 with 20 seconds left, and Taylor Hardy gave us some life with a traditional three-point play to make it 38-35, but that was all we had. Kaylee Morey led us with 11 points and Taylor Hardy had nine.

The girls won a close game at Shead 42-38 on December 30. We were tied at the half but pulled ahead by a few baskets in the third. Unfortunately, we couldn’t put the game on ice, but we held on for the win. We only made one out of six foul shots in the end, but Shead couldn’t take advantage. We had balanced scoring with Rylee Eaton 10 points, Katie Hutchinson and Kaylee Morey each with seven, Macey Brown with six, and Brienna Limeburner had five.

The girls are 7-1 and in first place for the moment. We should end up in the top three, depending on how we finish. I feel the loss to Greenville wasn’t a bad thing, as it should give us some motivation and also show us a few things we need to be focusing on when we play the good teams. It will help get a poor shooting game on the big floor out of our system. If we use it as a learning experience, it will only make us stronger. We have another tough game with Schenck next week.
