GSA hosts cross country meet with stellar results

At the Blue Hill Fairgrounds September 20, the Eagle boys team won by a four point margin over Ellsworth with 38 points, powered by five top-15 finishes in a field of 64, including a second-place finish by freshman Sol Lorio. Freshman Thea Crowley took first place in the girls race.

“We knew they were fast, but they exceeded our expectations,” Coach Todd Eckenfelder said.

Lorio ran a 16:44 race, sophomore Clark Morrison placed fourth at 17:04, senior Caden Mattson sixth at 17:17 and juniors Ian Renwick finished 12th at 17:56. Junior Oliver Wilson edged out Deer Isle-Stonington sophomore Henry Penfold by 0.5 seconds for 14th place at 18:10.1.

Eighteen athletes ran for George Stevens for the win, with Mount Desert Island third (48 points), Bucksport fourth (121 points) and Searsporfifth (277 points).

Senior Benjamin Penfold and sophomore Henry Penfold ran for Deer Isle-Stonington High School for individual results, with Benjamin completing a 27:44 race for 60th place and Henry finishing 15th at 18:10.40.

Girls’ start

The George Stevens Academy girls racked up 87 points with five runners in a field of 33, for third place. Freshman Thea Crowley won with a 19:21 race, 41 seconds ahead of the field of 33. Junior Grace Broughton finished 14th (22:15), junior Josie Cuzj finished 18th (23:14), sophomore Beatriz Mariscal finished 28th (29:48) and senior Tylya Senel placed 32nd (34:24).

Mount Desert Island won with 25 points, with Ellsworth third at 46 points, and Bucksport and Searsport competing for individual results only.

The Eagles and Mariners next compete Friday, September 27, at Sumner, at 4 p.m., leading up to the Festival of Champions, where teams from across Maine and New England compete for team and individual results in Belfast October 5.

“We are excited about our future and are increasingly ‘bullish’ on our potential to achieve some fantastic results this season,” Eckenfelder said. “A great measuring stick will be in two weeks at Festival of Champions.”
