Deer Isle—The Deer Isle-Stonington High School Mariners surged past the George Stevens Academy Eagles in the second half of a girls varsity match up on January 31, clinching a 44-25 victory before a home crowd. Deer Isle’s Lily Gray set the pace with a jump shot off the tipoff and, after GSA’s Julianna Allen scored early from the foul line, the Mariners stepped in to stifle the Eagles’ offense while embarking on an eight-point run. Eagle freshman Evelyn Dagan scored from the three-point line with 1:45 left in the first quarter, then added two points from the foul line to close the gap to 10-6 to close the first quarter. The Mariners then outscored the Eagles by one in a second quarter that extended the Mariner’s lead to 16-11, a margin the Eagles maintained into the third quarter before the Mariners shifted into high gear, scoring 12 straight points in the final 4:45, ending with a reverse layup by Kaley Morey a split-second before the buzzer for a 30-13 score to open the final quarter.
Despite Dagan’s 12-point fourth quarter, the Eagles could not hold back the Mariners’ success at the rim. Rylee Eaton and Katie Hutchinson led the Mariners with 17 and 12 points, respectively, while Dagan scored 17 points and Vanessa Sherwood added five points for the Eagles.
The Mariners remain undefeated after crushing Jonesport-Beals 65-25 on February 2 and winning 58-40 over Searsport on February 4. (The score of the Mariner’s final regular season game February 6 against Bangor Christian was not available by press time.) They will receive a bye for the preliminary playoff round and play their quarterfinal on Monday, February 18, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
The Eagles pushed forward for a 67-17 victory over Lee Academy on February 2. The team missed the cut-off for the playoffs this year, and finished their season on Wednesday at Mattanawcook (score not available by press time).
