Deer Isle-Stonington High School’s Myles Brown drives the lane against a defender during a home game against Bangor Christian on January 3. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle— The boys basketball team beat a tall Bangor Christian team 49-32 on January 3. This game was a tough battle with both teams defending well. The second quarter ended with a Myles Brown three-pointer to give us a narrow 19-18 lead at the half. We got in quick foul trouble with BC in the bonus less than four minutes into the third quarter. Despite that, we built our lead to 10 points with four minutes left in the fourth quarter, but a quick three and a drive by BC narrowed it to five points, 35-30.
We buckled down, and a technical on the BC coach gave us a 39-30 lead with less than three minutes left. We made the stops and fought hard on the boards to keep control. Coleman Brown put in two foul shots with a minute left to push the lead to 11 and put the game away. BC pressed but we got the ball down court quickly for some easy points. Bangor Christian does not have a good record (1-8) but has played several close games in a tough schedule. Myles Brown led us with 17 points, Coleman Brown had 16, and Tobey Snow had five.
The boys lost to Jonesport 81-56 on January 7. We played well at first, trailing by one after the first quarter, but down 10 at the half. We struggled on defense in the third quarter and Jonesport shot well, as they usually do at home, and built their lead to 20 after three quarters. That was too tall an order to come back from there. Jonesport is undefeated and in first place in Class D, so this was a benchmark game for us. Myles Brown led us with 14 points, Nathan Thompson had nine, and Coleman Brown and Tobey Snow each with eight.
The boys are 3-5 and in the sixth place at the mid-point of the season. I have been impressed with our play so far, and we just need to continue with the intensity we have shown. We have been able to rebound well against taller teams and also close out games well. We have a couple tough games this week to see if we continue our momentum.
