Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy boys basketball team has hit the ground running, recording an early season 2-0 record with wins over Lee Academy and Deer Isle-Stonington High School.

The Eagles hosted the Mariners on December 11 in the first matchup of the season between the two teams. DISHS kept it close in the first quarter and held the deficit to single digits at 8-17 going into the second quarter. The next eight minutes was pure Eagle offense, though, as George Stevens Academy poured in 30 points in the second and held the Mariners scoreless to take a 37-8 lead into halftime.

The scoring was more balanced in the second half, but the Mariners were unable to climb back as the Eagles took the 75-27 victory. Junior Caden Mattson led all scorers with 20 points on the night, while senior Percy Zentz recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards. Sophomore Andrew Szwez and senior Tanner Ashley had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Myles Brown led the Mariners, now 0-1, with 10 points.

The Eagles opened the season at home with a 53-41 win against Lee Academy on December 8. That game was a tale of defense, as George Stevens Academy held the Pandas to just nine points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the first win of the season.

Lee Academy outscored the Eagles by three points in the first quarter of the game, and equal scoring in the second quarter allowed the Pandas a three-point lead going into halftime. George Stevens Academy finished the third quarter with a two-point lead before edging out the victory at the final buzzer.

Eagles head coach Dwayne Carter noted that the team’s defense through the first two games of the season has become more consistent, which has led to a successful transition game offensively.

“We have also had different players scoring which will make it hard for other teams to key in on just one or two different players,” added Carter.

Carter said there is still work to be done on both the offensive and defensive ends as the season continues.

“We will continue on becoming more consistent defensively and work on our defense and defensive rotations. Offensively we will be working on seeing the court better and taking advantage of our mismatches in a more productive way,” he said.

The Eagles will travel to Ellsworth on Friday before hosting Bucksport on December 18. Tipoff for both games is scheduled for 7 p.m.
