Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy girls soccer team has made a jump in the Class C North standings, right in time for playoffs.
The Eagles went from eighth place to fifth this week, after recording ties against Houlton and Orono, two teams ranked higher than them in the regular season.
George Stevens Academy was able to hold the Houlton Shiretowners to just one goal on Saturday, October 13, an improvement from the three goals allowed in the first contest between the two teams that led to a 0-3 loss earlier this season. The later matchup ended in a 1-1 tie.
The team held tough in its final regular season matchup on October 16, holding Orono to a 2-2 tie after a full 80 minutes and two overtime periods at home. The tie was also an improvement from a 1-2 loss against the Red Riots during an earlier matchup this season.
With the two ties and a 3-0 victory over the Deer Isle-Stonington High School Mariners on October 9, the Eagles finished the last three games of the season at 1-0-2, with a regular season record of 5-5-4.
If the standings stay as they are moving into the playoffs, George Stevens Academy would take on Sumner Memorial High School, ranked fourth, in Sumner on Wednesday, October 24, according to the Maine Principal’s Association tournament bracket. The contest would be a quarterfinal matchup, as both teams have earned a bye due to their spots in the standings.
This would be the fourth quarterfinal appearance for the Eagles since 2015. The team has only made it into the semifinals once during that time, with a 1-0 double overtime win against Penquis Valley in 2015. George Stevens Academy went on to lose a 0-4 semifinal matchup against Orono, which was the Class C state champion that year.
The quarterfinal game against Sumner would be the first time the two teams see each other this season. The two teams were not on each other’s regular season schedule.
Game time has yet to be announced.
