Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy girls soccer team has started to find its stride, according to coach Steve Bemiss, with two wins in the past week against Ellsworth and Deer Isle-Stonington High School.

The team now has three wins on the season to go along with a tie and four losses, good for seventh place in the Class C North standings as of September 26.

“We’re really starting to get there,” said Bemiss. “We have some girls who are starting to come around after a tough beginning of the season.”

The team came together offensively against Deer Isle-Stonington, netting 11 goals, five of which came before the 28-minute mark in the first half. The large lead allowed Bemiss to cycle in his entire roster three times, he said, which gave some of the substitutes some added experience on the field.

One of the surprises this season has been freshman Luna Perry-St. Peter, who is playing the sport for the first time, according to Bemiss. St. Peter scored two of the goals in the game against Deer Isle-Stonington, and Bemiss said she has only continued to improve since the beginning of the season.

“She’s really something to watch,” he said.

The team has six more games on the regular season schedule, including a home game against Ellsworth on October 2 and an away game against Mount Desert Island. The game against Mount Desert Island is one Bemiss is looking forward to, as he said the team has “played very well” on the Trojan’s field the last four years.

“We haven’t been able to win there, but we always seem to play well. With the way we’ve been improving so far, we could have a good shot.”

After the home game against Ellsworth on Tuesday, the remaining home games for the Eagles are October 11 against Orono and October 13 against Houlton.
