Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy girls soccer team is looking to bounce back from a 3-8-3 record and an early exit from the post season with a loss to Narraguagus in the prelims last year.
The Eagles suffered a 4-0 loss against Dexter High School on August 31, as coach Steve Bemiss’s team is still looking to shake the rust off from only having limited touches on the soccer ball since last season.
“I will say that we’ve made some progress, and I’m hoping for a quicker turnaround than last year,” said Bemiss.
Senior goalkeeper Bess MacArthur is a force in the net for George Stevens Academy again this season. Bemiss said that she has improved “at least 30 percent” from last year, when she was already arguably one of the top goalkeepers as a junior.
Another spotlight in the Eagles starting lineup is senior sweeper Julianna Allen, who Bemiss says has played the position “incredibly well.”
In all, the team has 12 seniors, four juniors four freshmen and three sophomores, making for a variety of varsity level experience.
“It’s difficult making a team out of 12 seniors and the rest underclassmen, but we’re working on it,” said Bemiss.
Offensively Bemiss said the team is struggling to find the back of the net right now, but that could change on a dime, he said.
The team hosted Bucksport High School on Tuesday, September 4, in the Eagles’ first home contest of the season. The teams tied 2-2 after two overtimes periods.
