George Stevens Academy and Deer Isle-Stonington High School have senior athletes who plan to continue their careers when college begins in the fall. GSA graduates Taylor Schildroth (basketball), Max Mattson (basketball), Stefan Simmons (baseball), Ava Sealander (swimming), Mary Richardson (track), Mary Brenna Catus (track) and Eliza Broughton (track) all plan to play sports for the schools they will attend, while Deer Isle-Stonington cross country and outdoor track runner Brendan Penfold is also set to further his running career in college. Each athlete has been a standout in their respective sports over the last four years.

Stefan Simmons helped lead the Eagles to three Class C North titles, winning the championship in 2017. He will attend Thomas College in Waterville and plans to play baseball for the Terriers. By Anne Berleant

Ava Sealander brought home GSA’s first state title in swimming in 2018 in the Class B Individual Medley. She will attend Scripps College in Claremont, Calif. and plans to swim for the Athenas. By Franklin Brown

Taylor Schildroth helped propel the Eagles to three straight Class C state basketball championships. He will attend The Nation Christian Academy prep school in Port St. Lucia, Fla. to play basketball for the Eagles. By Anne Berleant

Mary Richardson helped lead GSA to a Class C state cross country championship in 2016 and was a member of the 2018 state title-winning 4×800 relay team. She will attend Bates College in Lewiston and plans to run track and cross-country for the Bobcats. By John Richardson

Brendan Penfold won the Class C North cross country title and placed second at the state championship in 2017. He will attend Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. and plans to run cross country for the Garnet. By John Richardson

As center, Max Mattson pushed the Eagles to three Class C state basketball titles. He will attend Maine Maritime Academy in Castine and plans to play basketball for the Mariners. By Anne Berleant

Mary Brenna Catus ran with the Class C state cross country championship team in 2016 and was a member of the 2018 state title-winning 4×800 relay team. She will attend Wesleyan University in Middleton, Conn., and plans to run track for the Cardinals. By John Richardson

Eliza Broughton won the 2017 Penobscot Valley Conference cross country championships, setting a new course record at Orono. She also led the GSA team in the 2016 Class C state cross country championship with a second-place finish, and was a member of the 2018 state title-winning 4×800 relay team. She will attend Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. She is expected to run track for the Panthers. By John Richardson
