Junior Toby Snow hurls a pitch in a regular season game against Greenville. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The boys baseball team won their preliminary playoff game against Greater Houlton Christian Academy 6-0 on June 6. Mason Oliver pitched a gem, giving up just 2 hits and no walks. We played well in the field and had several timely hits to drive in runs. This was probably one of best games we played all year.
Mason Oliver had a 2 RBI triple, Nathan Winchester had a 2 RBI double, Robby Turner had an RBI single, and Silas Bates and Myles Brown each had a single. This was our game all the way.
The boys played Bangor Christian the next day, June 7, and lost 6-0. We actually played well for most of the game. With the score 0-0, we fell apart in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Bangor Christian scored 6 runs. It was a combination of the wheels just falling off, errors, walks, timely hits by BC, and we were in a hole.
We didn’t give up any more runs but couldn’t manufacture any on our own. Bangor Christian started their prime pitcher and switched after the fourth, so he could pitch again. Tobey Snow started for us and then Silas Bates came in to finish. Mason Oliver wasn’t eligible because he pitched the day before. We did get 4 hits, but mostly with 2 outs, and we couldn’t move the runners around. Mason Oliver had a double, Nathan Winchester, Tobey Snow, and Stephen Cochrane each with a single.
The boys end up with a 5-13 record and played much better than the record showed. It’s been a while since we won a playoff game. Looking ahead, there a many question marks as we graduate most of the starters, with junior Tobey Snow and freshman Myles Brown the only consistent starters to return. This means that the many freshmen who did get limited time will need to step up next year as they will define the team.
