Bucksport—The George Stevens Academy boys and girls track teams each scored a second-place finish at the Hancock County meet on May 18 in Bucksport, with 168 and 139 team points, respectively.
“The meet was an excellent tuneup meet for the state meet and we had some new late season qualifiers,” said coach Erich Reed.
Senior Eliza Broughton dominated for the Eagle girls, recording first place victories in the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles and second place in the 3200 meter run, behind her senior classmate Mary Richardson, who won by almost a full minute.
Also notching first place victories were sophomore Syra Gutow in the triple jump, senior Ava Sealander in the pole vault and senior Mary Brenna Catus in the 400 meter dash.
The girls relay teams also finished second in the 4×800 and 4×400. The 4×100 meter team was disqualified due to an illegal baton hand off.
The boys’ strength came from their own relay teams, which took firsts in the 4×800 and 4×400, and second in the 4×100, where they set a new school record at 47.01.
Sophomores Ian Howell (first), Parker Allen (second) and Nyamh Wolf (third) swept the 1600 meter race walk for 24 points. Other top finishers were Senior Max Mattson in the high jump and triple jump, junior Daniel Li in the long jump, and senior Joseph Norwood in the javelin throw.
The Eagles will compete in the PVC small school championships in Caribou on May 26 before the state championships June 2 in Waterboro.
“We hope to finish in the top five for boys and girls teams and also have a few state champions,” Reed said.
