Bangor—One week ahead of the Hancock County Championship meet at Bucksport May 18, the Eagle boys and girls track teams showed strenth in relay and distance events May 11 in Bangor, with the boys also taking firsts in field events.
The one-man Deer Isle-Stonington team of senior Brendan Penfold placed his school fifth, racing in three events for a total of 16 points. He took second in the 3200 meter race and then ran two tight races for fourth-place finishes, in the 1600 meter race, 1.5 seconds behind the top finisher, and fourth in the 800 meter race.
The Eagle boys team placed fourth, winning the 800 meter relay with freshmen Ian Renwick and Michael Moon and sophomores Max Severnyak and Trevor Cochrane, while junior Jeremiah Scheff won the 300 meter hurdles in 46.60, and sophomore Ian Howell won the 1600 meter race walk—at 9:06, over 90 seconds faster than the second-place finish.
In field events, senior Max Mattson took first in the high jump at six feet, and senior Joe Norwood threw the javelin 142 feet for a first place finish.
The boys team finished with 111 points behind Mount Desert Island (149), Orono (141) and Bangor (129).
The Eagles girls results played along similar lines, placing fourth overall, winning the 800 meter relay, with freshmen Josie Cruj and Jenna Eldridge and seniors Elana Bakeman and Eliza Broughton. Bakeman then teamed up with seniors Eliza Broughton, Zeya Lorio and Mary Brenna Catus to win the 400 meter relay. Catus also won the 800 meter run in 2:34, while senior Mary Richardson won the 3200 meter run by a 54 second margin at 12:11, and then took second in the 1600 meter run.
The girls finished with 95 points behind Orono (158), MDI (142) and Bangor (121).
