Mariner girls basketball move into semifinals with win over Ashland

BANGOR—The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners girls basketball team secured a semifinal berth after  a strong  performance over Ashland, winning 33-20  in a quarterfinal match up at the Cross Insurance Center February 17.

The undefeated, third-ranked Mariners were first to score and maintained a lead throughout, up 9-5 at the end of the first quarter and 15-9 at half time.

A short run by Ashland in the third quarter brought the #6 team within three points at 17-13 before the Mariners answered with a jump shot by freshman Taylor Hardy and senior Orly Vaughn’s  two points from the foul line in the final minute of the quarter.

The Mariners headed into the final quarter ahead 21-14 and kept Ashland scoreless for five minutes, extending their lead to 28 when Hutchinson fouled out of the game.

Gray and Morey led the Mariners with nine points each. Hutchinson added seven, Vaughn four, and Rylee Eaton and Hardy each scored two points.

The Mariners face #2Woodland on February 22, at 2:05 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center.
