The undefeated Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners play at the Cross Insurance Center Saturday, February 17, at 7:35 p.m. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The Deer Isle-Stonington girls basketball team is set to play Ashland (#9, 9-9) in the quarterfinal game at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Saturday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m. We remain the number 3 seed despite the fact we were undefeated. This has to do with the strength of schedule that we had this season.
Coach Randy Shepard is trying to get the team ready with a couple scrimmages with an alumni team made up of some of the better players from previous years. A long layoff between games is usually not a good thing without pushing the team to play with good energy. It has been beneficial this year because many of the girls have been battling the flu. This rest will give everyone a chance to recover.
We will be facing some high-power offense teams from the County. We play solid defense, but we cannot afford to take a quarter off as we have suffered a few times this year. We have shown resilience in those games, and we don’t give up until the end. This may be our saving grace. Go and support our team on Saturday!
